Hearing Tests

We offer diagnostic hearing tests in Boca Raton for patients of all ages. A hearing test is the first step in determining if a hearing loss is present, and if it is, what degree of loss you have. Our audiologists will administer your hearing test to assess your ability to hear different sounds at various frequencies. We will also assess how well you can hear words in noise and quiet.

Tinnitus Treatment

Labyrinth Audiology is different from other hearing clinics in the area because we provide in-depth tinnitus treatment. Tinnitus is a condition most commonly known as “ringing in the ears,” but it can also present itself as humming, buzzing, or hissing. We are one of the few practices that specialize in tinnitus treatment in Boca Raton, Florida. Our professionals are equipped to evaluate tinnitus, manage symptoms, and help our patients lead a better quality of life.

Our services and outstanding patient care lead other physicians in the area to recommend Labyrinth Audiology to their patients in need of hearing care. Most of our referrals are for the management of tinnitus and hyperacusis because we offer specialty services including tinnitus tests, assessments, and cutting-edge treatment.

Hyperacusis

Hyperacusis is a hearing disorder where you experience over sensitivity to sound. Sounds may seem too loud and can cause an extreme emotional reaction, such as annoyance or fear. While hyperacusis is more common in children, adults can also experience symptoms. At Labyrinth Audiology, we offer consultations to assess your hearing ability and we will work together to find a management plan that will help you. Treatment of hyperacusis may include a combination of sound therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, habituation therapy, and relaxation techniques.  Contact our office to learn more or to schedule a consultation.

Misophonia

Misophonia is a condition in which a person has an intense emotional response, such as anger or disgust, to certain sounds. These sounds are often made by other people, such as chewing or breathing. Diagnosis and treatment for misophonia is similar to hyperacusis; our audiologist will assess your hearing ability and perform a thorough consultation. A mixture of sound therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, exposure therapy, and relaxation techniques can help patients successfully manage emotional reactions associated with misophonia.

Vestibular Testing

An estimated 90 million Americans will experience dizziness at least once in their lifetime. The causes of peripheral and central vestibular disorders includes the following: age-related multisensory deficits, strokes and vascular insufficiencies, cerebellar degeneration, chemical and drug toxicities, benign paroxysmal positional vertigo, uncompensated Meniere’s disease, vestibular neuritis, labyrinthitis, and head trauma. Balance disorders are significant risk factors for falls in individuals 65 years and older.

Treating Vertigo and Balance Concerns

Vestibular rehabilitation therapy (VRT) has been highly effective for most individuals with disorders of the vestibular or central balance system. In many studies, customized VRT programs were significantly more effective than generic exercises in resolving symptoms.

The basis for the success of VRT is the use of existing neural mechanisms in the brain for adaptation, plasticity, and compensation. The extent of vestibular compensation and adaptation is closely related to the direction, duration, frequency, magnitude, and nature of the retraining stimulus. Specifically designed VRT exercise protocols take advantage of this plasticity of the brain to increase sensitivity and restore symmetry, which results in an improvement in vestibule-ocular control, an increase in the gain of the vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR), better postural strategies, and increased levels of motor control for movement.

Other factors that may affect the degree of individual compensation that can be achieved include overall physical status, the functional status of remaining sensory systems, integrity of central brain mechanisms, age, and higher sensory functions such as memory, motor coordination, and cognitive ability.
